A Journey from Despair to Hope: How Goodwill Caravan Helped Little Layla Reunite with Her Family
Every year, millions of refugees and displaced children face unimaginable dangers as they flee war, persecution, or poverty. Too often, they travel alone or become separated from their families, leaving them vulnerable to trafficking, abuse, and exploitation. According to the UNHCR, over 17.4 million refugee children worldwide are at risk of violence and trafficking. At Goodwill Caravan, every life we touch is a story of hope, resilience, and the power of compassion in action. This is the story of Layla, a young refugee child rescued by Goodwill Caravan whose journey from fear to safety reminds us why our mission matters.
Found Alone and Afraid
When the Goodwill Caravan team first met Layla, she was only 18 months old, alone in a detention centre, frightened, and without any family to comfort her. Her elderly grandmother, her last surviving relative, had been separated from her after being rushed to the hospital due to illness.
Left behind in the detention centre, Layla was at extreme risk of trafficking and organ trade, dangers that sadly threaten many vulnerable children along the refugee trail. Recent reports show the scale of this crisis: over 50 lone child asylum seekers went missing in the UK while in official care, and 41,000 grave violations against children were verified globally in 2024. These crimes are not only more frequent but increasingly brutal, showing the urgent need for protection and legal support.
Children like Layla, displaced by war and instability, face a heightened risk of trafficking, forced labor, or even organ trade, particularly when separated from family members or detained without proper guardianship.

Rescue and Protection
Our Goodwill Caravan Legal Team immediately intervened. Through our legal advocacy and protection work, we secured Layla’s release from detention and transported her safely to our Women and Children’s Shelter.
At the shelter, Layla received not only safety and care, but also emotional support, warmth, and stability every child deserves.
Family Reunification: A New Beginning
Over the following four months, our legal office worked tirelessly on family reunification paperwork. Every document, call, and case update brought us closer to reuniting Layla with her grandmother.
Finally, after months of coordinated legal and humanitarian efforts, Layla and her grandmother were reunited and are now living safely in Germany, where they are beginning a new life filled with hope and security.
Our Ongoing Mission
This success story is one of many examples of how Goodwill Caravan’s Legal Office supports vulnerable refugees, especially women, children, and unaccompanied minors.
Our team provides:
- Asylum support and detention release services
- Family reunification and relocation assistance
- Ongoing humanitarian and emotional support for refugees who have lost loved ones to war, drowning, or separation
Once Goodwill Caravan adopts a vulnerable family’s case file, we support them every step of the way, until they are safely housed by UNHCR or relocated through the Family Relocation Program to reunite with loved ones across Europe.
Compassion in Action
Layla’s story reminds us that behind every statistic is a child, a family, and a future worth protecting. At Goodwill Caravan, we remain committed to defending the most vulnerable, because every family deserves safety, dignity, and hope.
